We know your officers spend a lot of time supervising themselves, which is a big responsibility because they’re the face of your department out in your community. And they’re not always representing your department well—maybe they had a fight with their spouse, have difficult teenagers at home, or are having to moonlight to cover the bills and are always exhausted.
In his classic book, Emotional Survival for Law Enforcement, Kevin Gilmartin explains how officers become disengaged from their personal lives and the ways it impacts their professional lives. It is our mission to pick up where Gilmartin’s book leaves off, and we believe the best way to address these problems is at their core—from the inside out.
We provide personal leadership training that helps your officers to improve themselves as individuals—because that’s what your department is made of. Our law enforcement training inspires integrity on all levels and supports emotional survival. We cover a variety of topics including leadership, communication, time management, managing personal finances, public speaking and more.
When each officer has personal responsibility and success in all areas of his or her life, then your culture is improved as a whole. Which means you have fewer internal affairs issues, fewer sick days, less overtime, and a department your community can rave about.
Like you, leadership expert and author Dr. Joe Serio has seen the word leadership defined numerous ways over the years. Is it a position at the top of an organization? Is it the ability to make decisions? Does it pertain to just a small part of an organization’s employees?
With over three decades of speaking, leadership training, and, most importantly, real-life experience, his view is radically different. Joe appreciates, and shares with audiences, that leadership is about the integrity and daily choices made by each person in an organization. It’s about taking full responsibility for one’s decisions and actions. Leadership develops from the inside out.
Known for his work investigating the Russian Mafia, Joe brings a unique approach to his conference keynotes and law enforcement training programs, using stories from around the world, humor, and live music to deliver thought-provoking and life-changing presentations.
Not simply “war stories,” Dr. Serio brings the latest law enforcement research and best practices to his police training and conference keynotes.
Prior to launching Law Enforcement Development Training, Dr. Serio earned his Ph.D. in Criminal Justice at Sam Houston State University, one of the leading programs in the country. He was editor-in-chief of the popular magazine, Crime and Justice International, and coordinator of the U.S. Department of State’s International Law Enforcement Academy in Roswell, New Mexico. While in Moscow, he served as co-chair of the security committee of the American Chamber of Commerce.
Dr. Serio is the creator of the Law Enforcement Development series of books including Getting Healthy: 50 Lessons on Fitness for Law Enforcement; Leaving Blue: 50 Lessons on Retiring Well from Law Enforcement; and Dispatcher Stress: 50 Lessons on Beating the Burnout. He is the co-founder of The Healthy Dispatcher, dedicated to dispatcher training with leadership and wellness programs for your 911 dispatcher.
